Gentle handling builds confidence
One of the most important parts of early imprinting is gentle, deliberate handling. It builds trust and lifelong confidence. We start this from birth—please continue the same calm routine at home so your puppy feels secure and knows what to expect.
Like a baby, a puppy’s body is delicate. Avoid picking up your puppy unless it’s necessary. When you do lift, use the steps below.
How to lift safely
- Puppies / small dogs: Place one hand under the chest (behind the front legs) and the other supporting the hindquarters. Keep the back level and hold the puppy close to your body.
- Larger young dogs: Slide one arm behind the front legs and the other behind the hind legs, hug the dog to your chest, and lift with your legs—never your back.
- Never: lift by the front legs, scruff, collar, or tail. Avoid letting children carry the puppy.
- Set down gently: Lower with both hands until all four paws touch the floor, then release.
- Reward calm: Soft praise helps the puppy associate handling with safety.
Handled with care and consistency, your puppy will grow into a confident, steady companion.
