Understanding puppy vaccinations
Puppy vaccinations help build protection during early development, when puppies are more vulnerable to contagious diseases. Most schedules include a series of core vaccines spaced a few weeks apart, followed by boosters as your veterinarian recommends.
Core vaccination schedule (typical timing)
- 6–8 weeks: First DHPP (Distemper, Adenovirus/Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus)
- 10–12 weeks: Second DHPPvL2 + CV booster
- 14–16 weeks: Final DHPPvL2 + CV booster and Rabies vaccination (timing varies by local law and your veterinarian)
- 12–16 months: DHPPvL2 + CV booster and Rabies boosters
- Adulthood: DHPPvL2 + CV booster typically within a year, then commonly every three years (vet guidance varies)
Other vaccines your veterinarian may recommend
- Bordetella: Often recommended for dogs that train, board, groom, or socialize in higher-contact settings
- Leptospirosis: Considered based on regional wildlife/water exposure and environment
- Canine influenza: Sometimes recommended for higher-contact lifestyles
- Lyme disease: Considered in tick-heavy regions
Important considerations
Vaccination schedules are not one-size-fits-all. Your veterinarian will tailor recommendations based on your puppy’s health, location, and lifestyle. Completing the full puppy series is important for reliable immunity.
Always consult a licensed veterinarian before starting, changing, or delaying vaccinations.
