Understanding Puppy Vaccinations
A typical CDC-recommended puppy vaccination schedule involves a series of core shots (DHPP) given every 2 to 4 weeks from 6–8 weeks of age until they are at least 16 weeks old. After the initial series, a booster is given at one year of age, followed by boosters every three years for the DHPP vaccine.
Rabies vaccination is also a core vaccine, typically administered around 14–16 weeks, with boosters as recommended by your veterinarian.
Core Vaccination Schedule
- 6–8 weeks: First DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus) vaccine
- 10–12 weeks: Second DHPP booster
- 14–16 weeks: Third DHPP booster and Rabies vaccine
- 12–16 months: DHPP and Rabies boosters
- After one year: Booster for DHPP within one year of the last puppy dose, then every three years
Other Recommended Vaccines
- Bordetella: Recommended for puppies that will socialize with other dogs, such as at dog parks or day camps.
- Leptospirosis: May be recommended based on your location and the risk of exposure.
- Canine Influenza and Lyme Disease: Also recommended based on lifestyle and geographic risk.
Important Considerations
Your veterinarian will tailor the vaccination schedule to your puppy’s specific needs, lifestyle, and location. It is crucial to complete the entire series of shots as recommended to ensure your puppy is properly protected.
Always consult with a licensed veterinarian before starting or modifying your puppy’s vaccination plan.
