Puppy Selection Process

Every puppy is unique. Our goal is to match the right puppy with the right family.

Matching the Right Puppy with the Right Family

One of the most common questions we receive is, “How does your puppy selection process work?”

At Gunbil German Shepherds, puppy selection is not based simply on color, markings, photographs, or a strict first-come, first-served system.

Every puppy is unique. Every puppy is an individual. Every puppy is special in its own way. Even within the same litter, puppies can differ significantly in confidence, energy level, drive, social tendencies, environmental stability, and overall personality.

For that reason, our objective is not to identify the “best” puppy. Our objective is to identify the puppy that is best for you.

Our Commitment to Every Puppy We Breed

At Gunbil German Shepherds, we are not simply looking for puppy buyers.

We are looking for responsible dog owners who will provide our puppies with a safe, stable, healthy, and loving environment throughout their lives.

Every puppy we bring into this world represents years of planning, pedigree research, health testing, evaluation, and dedication to the German Shepherd Dog.

These puppies are not products. They are living companions that will become part of someone’s family for the next decade or more.

For that reason, finding the right home is just as important as finding the right puppy.

Why We Do Not Use a Strict First-Come, First-Served System

Many breeders allow buyers to select puppies solely based upon deposit order. While this system is simple, we do not believe it consistently creates the best outcome for the puppy or the family.

Deposits establish reservation priority, but they do not automatically determine puppy placement.

The primary purpose of our placement process is compatibility.

Reservation priority becomes important mainly when two families are seeking a very similar puppy character profile and have comparable household environments, experience levels, and goals.

In those situations, reservation priority may be used as a determining factor.

Our focus is not competition. Our focus is compatibility.

Understanding Your Family

After a reservation deposit or puppy purchase is completed, every family receives our Puppy Selection Questionnaire.

This form allows us to better understand your lifestyle, experience, goals, and expectations before we begin making puppy recommendations.

  • Family structure
  • Previous dog ownership experience
  • German Shepherd experience
  • Training goals
  • Activity level
  • Household environment
  • Children in the home
  • Other dogs or animals
  • Desired temperament and personality
  • Long-term expectations for your German Shepherd

Our Puppy Matching Guarantee

All reservation deposits and puppy purchases are fully refundable until your puppy has been picked up, delivered, or has officially gone home with its new family.

If at any point during the selection process we recommend a puppy and you do not feel the puppy’s temperament, personality, character profile, energy level, or overall suitability is the right fit for your family, we will gladly issue a 100% refund.

No pressure. No arguments. No hard feelings. No questions asked.

The only time payments become non-refundable is after the puppy has been picked up, delivered, or has officially gone home with its new family.

Professional Puppy Evaluation

Meaningful puppy evaluation requires substantially more than a brief visit, a photograph, or watching a puppy for a few minutes.

By the time puppy selections begin, we have spent weeks observing each puppy’s development, behavior, litter interaction, confidence, and temperament progression.

  • Social confidence
  • Environmental confidence
  • Recovery from new experiences
  • Human engagement
  • Food drive
  • Prey drive
  • Curiosity
  • Independence
  • Adaptability
  • Energy level
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Litter interaction
  • Overall temperament progression

Our Character Profile System

Over the years, we have developed a practical character profile system that helps us describe personality differences within a litter.

These profiles are not rankings. No profile is better than another. Each profile simply represents a different personality type.

Alpha

Highly confident, assertive, environmentally bold, and naturally inclined to take charge.

Alpha-Beta

Confident, outgoing, and highly adaptable while maintaining greater handler responsiveness than a true Alpha.

Beta

Balanced, stable, adaptable, and well-suited for many homes.

Beta-Omega

Gentle, cooperative, people-oriented, and generally lower in social pressure.

Omega

Softer, more sensitive personalities that often thrive in calm, patient, structured homes.

Our Five-Year Temperament Guarantee

Temperament is one of the most important characteristics of any German Shepherd.

Because we place such a strong emphasis on temperament evaluation, proper placement, and long-term compatibility, we proudly offer a Five-Year Temperament Guarantee.

After nearly three decades of breeding, raising, observing, and evaluating German Shepherd puppies, we have developed tremendous confidence in our ability to assess developing temperament and character traits.

Very few breeders are willing to stand behind their temperament evaluations in this way. We are.

We believe in our breeding program, our puppy evaluations, and our placement process. Our guarantees reflect that confidence, and our families deserve to share it.

Matching Temperament to Lifestyle

The most successful placements occur when a puppy’s temperament characteristics align with the household, expectations, and long-term goals of the family.

A family with young children, visiting guests, multiple pets, and a busy household may need a very different puppy than an experienced handler pursuing advanced sport, working, or protection training.

For this reason, we evaluate both sides of the equation: the puppy and the family.

Our objective is not simply to place puppies. Our objective is to create successful long-term partnerships.

The Final Selection Process

As selection time approaches, we review our puppy evaluations, your questionnaire, your goals, and your home environment.

We then provide guidance and recommendations based on the individual characteristics of each puppy.

Families remain actively involved in the process, but our recommendations are based on weeks of structured observation and developmental evaluation.

The best puppy is not necessarily the puppy with the darkest pigment, the largest bone structure, the boldest personality, or the most striking markings.

The best puppy is the puppy whose temperament, drives, confidence level, and character are most compatible with your goals and lifestyle.

Our Promise

Our goal has never been to place the greatest number of puppies.

Our goal is to place each puppy into the home where it has the greatest opportunity to live a successful, fulfilling, and well-cared-for life.

We take tremendous pride in matching the right puppy with the right family.

It is a commitment we make to every family who places their trust in us. More importantly, it is a commitment we make to every puppy we bring into this world.

Our responsibility is to help ensure that your puppy thrives in its new forever home. That is our promise to you. And it is our promise to our dogs.
