Breeding Female (Dam) FAQ

What is the Hip, ZW score?

The ZW score is a number used by German Shepherd breeders in Germany (the SV system) to measure the genetic risk of hip dysplasia.

  • 100 is considered the breed average.
  • 90–99 = Very Good hips.
  • 80–89 = Excellent hips.
  • 70–79 = Supreme hips (outstanding/elite).
  • Lower than 70 = Exceptionally rare, supreme elite level.
  • Higher than 100 means the dog has a higher risk than average.
What is Kkl1 (Breed Survey)?

Kkl1 is the SV breed survey rating indicating a dog is recommended for breeding, meeting strict requirements for structure, temperament, and health.

What does "DM" mean?

Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a hereditary spinal cord disease in German Shepherds. DNA testing gives three results:

  • N/N (Clear): Dog is not affected and will not pass on the mutation.
  • A/N (Carrier): Dog carries one copy of the mutation but is not affected. Should only be bred to Clear.
  • A/A (At Risk): Dog carries two copies; at risk of developing DM and can pass it to offspring.

DM Clear (N/N) = Ideal for breeding.

What are BSZS world rankings?

BSZS (Bundessiegerzuchtschau) is the German Sieger Show—the world’s top conformation event for the breed. A ranking (e.g., SG2, SG26) reflects world-class evaluation by SV judges.

What is IGP1/IGP2/IGP3?

IGP (Internationale Gebrauchshunde Prüfungsordnung) is the international working dog trial, testing tracking, obedience, and protection. Titles are earned in levels:

  • IGP1 (IPO1/SchH1): Foundation level — demonstrates basic ability in all three phases, showing trainability, control, and stable nerves.
  • IGP2 (IPO2/SchH2): Intermediate level — more advanced exercises, requiring greater precision, obedience under distraction, and stronger protection work.
  • IGP3 (IPO3/SchH3): Highest level — advanced tracking, obedience, and protection, showcasing courage, self-confidence, and absolute handler control. Required for top competition and breeding qualifications in Germany.
What is BH?

BH (Begleithundprüfung) is the German companion dog test. It evaluates obedience and temperament in everyday situations, and is required before higher working titles like IGP.

What is AD?

AD (Ausdauerprüfung) is an endurance test where the dog runs 20km (12.4 miles) alongside a bicycle at a steady pace, proving stamina, fitness, and sound structure.

How do hip/elbow ratings (A1/A2) work?

A1 = Excellent and A2 = Good per SV/FCI standards; both are certified free of dysplasia. Elbows are graded similarly.
